Active Disciplines

Show Jumping

Showjumping tests the ability of horse and rider to jump over a series of obstacles inside a riding arena. Horses and riders jump over a preset course of 10 to 20 jumps that are up to 1.60m high or 2.0m wide. Courses are designed with many tricky turns and colorful obstacles challenging both the mental and physical agility of horse and rider. The horse/rider teams must finish within a set time and penalties are given for knocking down rails and other faults.

Showing

Showing as an equestrian discipline strives to exhibit the most nearly perfect example of a particular type or breed of horse. Competitors must be skilled in the training and presentation of the horse as an athlete. When showing a horse, the rider has to perfect that art of riding the horse to show it off to its best advantage.

Dressage

Dressage is a French term meaning ‘training’ and its purpose is to develop the horse’s natural athletic ability and willingness to work making him calm, supple and attentive to his rider. In the discipline of Dressage, the horse and rider perform a series of predetermined movements. These are known as ‘movements’ or ‘figures’.

Polocrosse

Polocrosse is an exciting team sport played on horseback between teams of 6 players each, with each team divided into two sections of three. Very simply, a “section” is made up of the “Attack” player (or No.1), who’s job it is to score goals, the “Centre” player (No.2), who acts as both an offensive and defensive player, and the “Defence” player (No.3), who’s ultimate duty is to prevent the opposing team’s No.1 from scoring.

Endurance

Endurance is a long-distance competition against the clock, testing the speed and endurance of a horse and challenging the rider over their effective use of pace, thorough knowledge of their horse’s capabilities and ability to cross all kinds of terrain. Although the rides are timed, the emphasis is on finishing in good condition rather than coming in first.

Tentpegging

The sport of Tentpegging, formerly known as Gymkhana, involves swords and lances, with which the rider has to strike an object at a full gallop. The bond of trust between horse and rider has no boundaries. To successfully strike an object that is driven into the ground or hanging from an overhead gallows construction, calls for the rider to focus on the object and to strike it without having to distract his concentration by shifting his attention to his horse.
